A feminist fairytale retelling becomes a real-life nightmare.

From USA Today bestselling author Melissa F. Miller comes a haunting psychological thriller about two women trapped by a storm, tormented by the past, and desperate to survive the present.

A stay in a remote cabin is supposed to help Emily Rose finish her book—a feminist retelling of a fairytale about a princess and her lady-in-waiting imprisoned in a tower. Instead, it becomes the setting for a reckoning seven years in the making.

Emily has spent years hiding her trauma from the night she found her roommate murdered. When her husband, Tristan, arranges a writing retreat for her, she meets Alex, the owner of the isolated property and a woman with secrets of her own—including one that could destroy Emily's marriage.

Trapped by a fierce storm and haunted by the brutal attacks that marked their pasts, a series of unnerving events—a watcher in the woods, a smashed cell phone, slashed tires—forces the women together to rescue themselves from a very real, present danger.

Interspersed with passages of The Tower, Emily’s work-in-progress, Cut Off from Sky and Earth is a chilling exploration of the weight of memory, the burden of trauma, and the courage it takes to break free.

For readers of psychological suspense, feminist thrillers, and literary mysteries with a dark fairytale edge.

Enthralling, engrossing, seriously thought-provoking "feminist thriller"!

Wow! A thriller from favorite author Melissa F. Miller. Though this is a little different then her other books, it is not to be missed. It raised the question in my mind of "What is true love?" Through this book and a few others, I think that as much as the male may want to protect his love, the female has that same right. To love truly is to empower each other to overcome their issues themselves. Being open and honest is part of that. In Cut Off From Sky and Earth, Emily and Tristan have secrets they keep from each other and it inevitable hurts their relationship. Emily states that "protection can become its own kind of prison". Do they live through their trauma? Will they find their way back to each other? Read and find out.

Off the Charts

OMG could not put this book down. A stand alone but cut above the best. Melissa keeps you on edge from beginning to end. She gives you crumbs that feeds the frenzy but you won't see the ending coming. She shows you that you can dig very deep to overcome the worst of humanity. A timely novel.

Incredible Story!

I always enjoy reading books by Melissa Miller, but I believe this one is the best yet. There are three main characters in this book: Tristan, his wife, Emily, and Alex. The story revolves around events that happened in the past - events that seem to take place every seven years, involve women with red hair, and occur during storms. The action in the story reflects the work-in-progress that Emily is trying to finish, and is brilliantly written. There are so many twists and turns, it's hard to know who the murderer is until the very end. It certainly kept me on the edge of my seat!

Pleasant change

I have been a fan of Melissa Miller from the first book in the Sasha McCandless series. This book is a psychological thriller unlike anything I have previously read by this author. In fact, it was a pleasant change. The story developed at a nice pace with details revealed through different character perspectives. Kind of kept me guessing until the end.

No matter your tower, there is hope

I generally don't like psychological thrillers. Too creepy. Its also another type of book I don't like but wont say because it gives away too much plot. BUT I liked this book mainly because of the intertwinded stories and the parallels to what one character was writing (again no spoinlers). The nerd in me thought I had it all figured out (but guess what I didn't!!). Melissa added a twist I should have seen coming but was probably too arrogant to see because thinking back she gave lots of clues. Again no spoilers because you will have to see if you figure it out yourself. This book could have been creepier but I was glad it wasn't because it was one of "heck" of a story. Mellissa said it best, we need to be "resilient, optimistic and brave despite the odds and despite our fears". This book struck a cord in me that I did not expect especially given what is going in our lives and in our country. In my case, I care for my Mother with dementia - it's my tower (for now and also one many others share) and a very long story I hope to write someday. Melissa gave me hope with this story and her quote "kindness, connection and resistence matter in the face of darkness". No matter what you are going through, read this story, it may give you hope. There is hope no matter how much darkness & life messiness you are currently dealing with. Enjoy!

An eye opener

Melissa is one of my favorite authors. This book was completely different than the other works she has written. Great use of first person throughout. Without giving anything away, the locale was not in the usual places she writes about. It was suspenseful, and a bit more dark than her other works. There was a lot of pain and long suffering from all the characters. I did like the book even though it left me sad.

Amazing psychological thriller!

Melissa F. Miller has reached deep to write a book so different from her usual genres, and has penned an extremely well written and captivating book!

The characters are so well written and the style used in writing the book really lends itself to providing such depth of each person and their closely held secrets and thoughts.

There are so many twists and turns that are as tightly entwined as the threads of an intricate ball of yarn.

Plan on a late night of reading because you won’t want to put it down.

Truly Binge Worthy

This is an edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller where nothing is really trustworthy. The characters have all been seriously traumatized and each is coping in his or her own way, which makes them all highly unreliable as narrators. Consequently, as a reader, I had to keep shifting my conclusions and turning pages to learn what was really going on. Highly addictive and very well done.

I would like to read the book Emily was writing in this book and another book delving more into the emotional consequences of the action on Emily. Tristan, and Tristan’s mother. Please!

Psychological thriller

This book was both engrossing and a bit scary at the same time. Not a book to maybe read before bed. Each chapter is written from that characters perspective but is easy to read as there aren't many characters. It is definitely and example of a puzzle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in an egnima. So many twists and turns despite you thinking you know where the author is leading you. Really good.

I was unable to put this book down; finished in two days

Cut off from Sky and Earth is an intense thriller revolving around two women, Emily and Alex, who share a horrific experience, separately, with different outcomes that were intended to be the same. Now, years later, they are united in a chilling tale of survival. Emily and Alex unknowingly share a bond that few may ever experience. But they've never even met until now. Emily is a famous author that refuses to appear publicly to promote her books for fear of being recognized. Several years ago, her roommate was viciously attacked and murdered. Emily believes she was the victim. Several years prior, Alex was brutally attacked, she should have died. When Emily suffers writers block close to the anniversary of the death of her roommate, her husband books a retreat for her at Alex's inn. What and who is the connection to their pasts and their attacks? Cut Off from Sky and Earth allowed my mind to explore ways of viewing and adjusting my emotions through alternative spiritual beliefs and meditation. It was an insight into strength, overcoming individual fears and looking deeper into those we may not immediately understand, finding common ground so we may move forward, working together towards an important, even life-saving goal. Author Melissa F Miller has given her readers an exception novel. Highly recommend!
